Social Insurance Bank (SVB) uses population censuses

12-10-2005

For its study of age structure, SVB used the historical overview of the Dutch population censuses. The results of this study showed that there was no appreciable change in the Dutch age structure between 1830 and 1930. Since 1930, however, the age group ‘older than 65 years’ has continually been growing.

The trends in the population development can be deduced from the census data of Statistics Netherlands. For SVB this information is essential. SVB uses these population forecasts for estimating the number of future AOW (Old Age Pensions Act), AnW (Survivor’s Benefit Act) as well as AKW (Child Benefit) clients.

After the Second World War, a fundamental change was manifest in the structure of the different age groups. Particularly since 1970 the number of children declined, while the number of elderly persons (>65 year) rapidly increased. The most important reason is that much more people reach the age of 65 than in the past. In 2038 this age group will amount to 25 percent of the total population, a fourfold multiplication compared to 100 years before.
